Keegan Dewitt
Keegan Dewitt began in Bend, Oregon, but the road to music was a winding one. Early on, Keegan studied poetry, music, and screenwriting at the Pacific Crest Community School in Portland. There he met Aaron Katz and together they began to make a series of short films. Dewitt's devotion was to film, moving to New York state to attend SUNY Purchase for directing, and then on to New York City where he attended the Atlantic Theater Company Acting Conservatory founded by David Mamet. After attending the prestigious institution, Dewitt became a young associate with the LABrynth Theater Company founded by Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
In New York's Lower East Side, Keegan Dewitt was born as a performer. Already a relatively accomplished actor and composer, Dewitt honed his songwriting and performing talents in the storied atmosphere there. His first release, Songs From the Byrd Chorus, was recorded in 2003 with friend and future brother-in-law, Skip Matheny. With this debut recording, Dewitt began to concentrate further on his recording career, while continuing to keep his eye on scoring and composition for film. Around this time, Dewitt began to perform along side Matheny's band Roman Candle as a vocalist and touring guitarist, further crafting his stage presence and performing talent.
In 2006, Dewitt released his sophomore effort of demos and sketches entitled, Keegan Dewitt and the Sparrows. Having self released his first album on his own, this time Dewitt had a label to go with it, called Dual Coast Recording Company. Moving into 2009, Dewitt continued to tour with Roman Candle while growing as a solo artist. Having played South by Southwest in the past, this time Dewitt returned as a showcasing artist and was shortly signed to Izumi Records.
Dewitt's first release on the label, entitled Islands, was released in Fall 2009 simultaneously in the US and Europe. Dewitt toured in both regions in support of the album and soon began recording the yet to be named follow up slated for a 2010 release.
Dewitt's music is at all times well crafted, whether simply moving from one chord progression to another or highlighting rolling guitar against soft bass lines and driving drums. The lyrics are heart felt and poetic as Dewitt's voice, at times smooth and others gravely, rises and falls to the emotions portrayed. His classical training shines through in his touching piano ballads, laced heavily with strings and sadness. Dewitt is a product of years of training and practice, and this devotion shines brightly through the dark clouds of his compositions. Evident thought is placed into every note and word.
Dewitt continues to grow as an artist, bringing his heartfelt message of love, longing, sadness, and regret along with the often haunting marriage of those words to music that graces the soul with feeling.
